Installation Update for 2015 Temporary Public Art

New temporary artworks have been installed in City parks

Summary

The City of Nanaimo is celebrating Public Art Week from May 11 to 15, 2015. Seven new pieces of temporary art were approved for 2015 and have been installed throughout the City. To date, the following pieces have been successfully installed:

--- EMBARKING by Marc Walter - Installed at Maffeo Sutton Park (near Newcastle ferry dock). --- SOLSTICE by Elizabeth Wellburn, Deryk Houston & Samuel Houston - Installed at MacGregor Park (across from Port Theatre). --- TALL CRABS by Michael Truelove - Installed at Maffeo Sutton Park (near Frank Ney statue). --- CAKE by Ron Hart & Michael Fugeta - Installed at Maffeo Sutton Park. --- INFRAWOLF by Tonya Hart - Installed on the roof of the Vancouver Island Regional Library (Harbourfront Branch) and best viewed at night when illuminated.

Installation of the following pieces will be complete by the end of May:

--- COMING SOON by Jason Gress - To be installed at Maffeo Sutton Park. --- DANCING EAGLE by Joel Good - To be installed at Maffeo Sutton Park.

  • Back by popular demand: DUNGENESS CRAB, a popular temporary piece carved by Dan Richey in 2014, has returned to the waterfront.
  • SPINDLE WHORL, carved by Joel Good in 2013, was recently relocated from Maffeo Sutton Park to the corner of Albert Street/Victoria Crescent along with an integrated public seating feature.
  • The 2015/16 City STREET BANNERS have been installed on major routes throughout the City. The banner was designed by artist Laura Timmermans.
