City of Nanaimo Dams

Recreational Dams

Nanaimo's recreational dams are remains of early mines or power-generating operations. The water bodies created by these dams are found in the City of Nanaimo or the Regional District of Nanaimo parks.

Dams That Service Our Water Supply

Jump Creek, South Fork and Reservoir No.1 dams are part of the City’s potable water supply system and an integral part of our everyday life here in Nanaimo.

In total, Nanaimo is home to eleven dams all of which have to meet the Dam Safety Regulations (DSR) set out by the Province of BC.

    Dam Safety Regulations (DSR)

The Dam Safety Regulation (DSR) has requirements and best practices for all aspects of dam design, construction, operation, maintenance, removal and decommissioning of dams. It replaced the B.C. Dam Safety Regulation in 2016.

Regulated dams require a water licence under the Water Sustainability Act and must meet the requirements specified in the Dam Safety Regulation.
