Chase Dams

Upper, middle and lower Chase Dams

The Chase Dams are steeped in the history of coal mining in the Nanaimo region. Built by the Western Fuel Company in 1910 and 1911, these dams created several reservoirs, to supply water for coal washing and firefighting. As the coal industry declined,  ownership of the dams was transferred to the City of Nanaimo,  which converted them into recreational and ecological assets.

Lower and Middle Chase Dams

The lower and middle dams are located in Colliery Dam Park. This 27.2 hectare destination nature park offers water views from its extensive trail system. The dammed lakes are part of the Chase River system and popular swimming and fishing features. Maintenance of the dams are guided by the provincial safety regulations, however; the City of Nanaimo engages with the Colliery Dam Preservation Society and Harewood Neighbourhood Association on a number of dam and park related topics and projects.
