Dangerous or Aggressive Dogs

The City has requirements in place to address dangerous or aggressive dogs to help ensure public safety.

What is Considered Dangerous or Aggressive

A dog may be considered dangerous if it has caused injury, poses a risk to public safety, or behaves in a threatening manner.

Requirements

If your dog has been deemed dangerous, there are a number of requirements:

  • Application for an Aggressive Dog licence within fourteen (14) of receiving a notice from the Poundkeeper
  • Dog must be secured by a collar or a harness and leash that is a maximum length of 1.83 metres (6 feet) when not on the owner's property
  • Keep the dog muzzled when not on the owner's property
  • Predominantly display at each entrance to the property and building a sign as per Schedule A of the Bylaw 7316
  • When on the owner's property, the dog must be securely confined behind a secured fence at least 6 feet tall or in an enclosure when outside

Application Requirements

  • The dog must be registered by an owner who is 19 years of age or older
  • Supply a completer licence application, written confirmation from a licenced veterinarian that the dog has been spayed or neutered and proof that the dog has permanent identification

Annual Requirements

By January 30 of each year the owner must supply the following documentation:

  • Proof that a policy of liability insurance is in force that provides third party liability coverage naming the City as additional insurance to the minimum of $1,000,000, for any injuries caused by the dog; and
  • A side view, full body colour photo of the dog
