Elections

Nanaimo’s next General Local Election will be held on October 17, 2026.

Every four years, eligible voters elect a mayor and eight councillors. These leaders make the decisions that help shape our community and guide the delivery of many local services that affect daily life. Visit the Mayor and Council webpage to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of the City's elected officials.

Why vote?

  • It’s your opportunity to choose future leaders who reflect what matters most to you.
Elected leaders are accountable to the people living in their community and make decisions on their behalf.
  • Local elections shape your community and have an impact on the services you use every day.
Roads, water and sewer, fire and police, parks and recreation, waste management, land use planning and business licensing are some examples of areas a local government is responsible for.
  • Voting is both your democratic right and responsibility.
Take an active role in your community by voting and encouraging others to vote.
