Fields

We currently have 23 sports fields throughout the city. They range from large sites to smaller neighbourhood fields and a mixture of natural and artificial turf. Each field offers various amenities and is suitable for a wide range of sports and activities.

Barney Moriez Park â–¼

The park was improved through the VIP program in 2000 where various pieces of playground equipment were added, including a basketball hoop, swings, a play structure and slides which are referred to as the "best slides in town." The play field portion of this park is used for community play.

The one-acre neighbourhood park was acquired in 1963 and is named after a fireman who lost his life in the line of duty at the nearby gas plant on September 7, 1977.

Beban Artificial Fields - Merle Logan & Second Artificial Turf â–¼

Merle Logan:
This is a lighted artificial turf field located within the Beban Park campus. Sport lines on the field include; soccer, including 7-aside. There is a large partially paved parking lot. The field shares a small field house with washrooms. The field was dedicated to the memory of Merle Logan, a longtime volunteer within the local soccer community.

Second Artificial Turf (SATF):
This is a lighted artificial turf field located within the Beban Park campus. The field is lined for; soccer, field lacrosse and NCWA football (hash tags only). There is a large partially paved parking lot. The field shares a small field house with washrooms.

Beban Gyro Fields â–¼

The Beban Gyro Field is a season dependent space that offers 3 grass soccer fields or 4 ball diamonds, or 1 cricket field.

Bowen West Fields â–¼

This sports field is located on the west side of Bowen Park and hosts soccer and baseball - season dependent.

Caledonia Field â–¼

Caledonia Park is located adjacent to Bowen Park and the Nanaimo Curling Centre. A number of field sports use the park and cinder track on site. The park is also the site of a number of annual community events.

The City acquired the park in 1953 from the Railway Company. The Railway Company had gifted it to the Nanaimo Caledonia Society to establish a cricket pitch in 1891. The structures and grandstand were built in the 1950s, so the field itself has been there since the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Comox Gyro Field â–¼

Another of Nanaimo's oldest parks, created in 1895. This park is near the downtown core just a few blocks down from Bowen Park. The park includes a playground and a play field. It is also home to the Scout Hut built in 1930. The playground area is currently used by students at Pauline Haarer School at lunch and recess times.

Departure Bay Centennial Fields â–¼

This is a large scale destination neighbourhood park with a variety of features, including tennis courts, pickleball courts, a multi-use court (i.e. box hockey), play field perfect for frisbee or soccer and two ball diamonds. The Departure Bay Activity Centre is located on the site as well and is used for a variety of registered Parks, Recreation & Culture programs. The park is very popular in the summer months as it is home to a great water park.

Deverill Square Field â–¼

Deverill Square (formerly Haliburton Park) is a neighbourhood park featuring a water park (seasonal), playground, basketball court and play field. Over the course of 2007 as a result of a partnership with the local neighbourhood association, upgrades were made to the park, including field lights, playground equipment and improved wheelchair accessibility.

Elaine Hamilton Fields â–¼

Located in south Nanaimo, this community park offers playfields, a field house and large gravel parking lot. It is a popular location for smaller field sport tournaments.

Groveland Gyro Fields â–¼

Acquired in 1980, this neighbourhood park has a playground (swings, slide and climbing structure), a play field, hard surface court, paved and soft surface trails, and picnic area. The park was renamed Groveland Gyro Park in 2014.

Sports field is located at the old Harewood School and can be used for community activities such as family fun days and neighbourhood events.

East Turf:
Partnership field with SD68. This artificial turf field is lined for soccer, football, and lacrosse. The field includes lighting and access to shared amenities on site.

West Turf:

Harry Wipper Fields â–¼

Acquired in 1981, this sports field is found off of Hammond Bay Road and is adjacent to the Walley Creek Trail.

Mansfield Field â–¼

Mansfield Park is a large neighbourhood park lot and includes a playfield area, playground and water park feature. It is a well-used park and popular for children's sports programs. Over the course of the spring of 2013 the park underwent some extensive upgrades.

May Bennett / Pioneer Park Fields â–¼

May Richards Bennett Park has something for everyone! Here you'll find the popular Rotary Skate Park, tennis courts, pickleball courts, great walking trails, a dog off leash park, and sports fields for soccer, rugby, and football. Home to the Nanaimo Hornets Rugby teams and Nanaimo Football, it's a busy place on the weekends for field sports.

This facility is leased to the McGirr Sports Society.

Q’unq’inuqwstuxw Stadium â–¼

Nanaimo's newest artificial field constructed in 2018. The field is co-owned by the City of Nanaimo and School District #68. The field is lined for the following sports: Rugby, Soccer, NCWA football with CFL end zones and Field Lacrosse. The field is available for community use in the evenings and weekends.

Pleasant Valley Fields â–¼

Pleasant Valley Park is used primarily for soccer and baseball league play and practices. The fields have bleachers in place. There are also basketball hoops on site. The public is welcome to use the fields for casual use (frisbee, pick up soccer etc.) but please respect group bookings.

Robins Park is the host site for a number of baseball teams throughout the year. The south end of the park is lit allowing for evening play.

Serauxmen Sports Fields â–¼

Acquired in 2000, this 25.3-hectare park borders Third Street and Jingle Pot Road. The Nanaimo Ice Centre is part of this park, as well as the Serauxmen Sports Fields. A multi-use trail connects this park to Buttertubs Marsh. The centre feature of this park is protected marsh land.
