The City of Nanaimo regulates the temporary use of fire hydrants to ensure public safety, protect infrastructure, and manage water responsibly.

🔐 Permit Requirement

Anyone wishing to operate or draw water from a City-owned fire hydrant must obtain a Hydrant Use Permit. This applies to contractors, developers, and event organizers.

📅 Application Timeline

  • Applications and fee payments must be submitted at least 72 hours before the requested use date.

💵 Fees

  • A permit fee is required (amount may vary based on usage and equipment).
  • Additional charges may apply for hydrant meters, backflow prevention devices, and water consumption.

📋 Conditions of Use

  • Only authorized personnel may operate hydrants.
  • Backflow prevention is mandatory to protect the water supply.
  • Hydrants must be operated using City-approved tools and procedures.
  • Permit holders are responsible for any damage to hydrants or infrastructure.
  • Notify Nanaimo Fire Rescue immediately if a hydrant is out of service or water pressure is affected.
