Candidate Information
On election day, voters will elect one (1) Mayor and eight (8) Councillors for a term of four (4) years.
Thinking of running in the election? Here is some information that potential candidates should be aware of before seeking election.
-
The role of Mayor and Councillors
Members of Council serve their community by making decisions that take into account the well-being and interests of the municipality and the people who live here.
The Community Charter gives Council the authority to set budgets, levy taxes and establish policies to guide the growth, development and operation of the City for the benefit and protection of its residents.
Visit the BC Government website for information and helpful resources on the roles of elected officials in the community.
-
How decisions are made
Council decisions are made by adopting bylaws and passing resolutions through motions that are debated and discussed at Council meetings. Once a member of Council makes a motion, another member of Council needs to second it and following any discussion all members can vote on it.
These decisions guide the delivery of local services, set policy and determine the City's strategic priorities by providing direction to City staff.
