Second Structure Fire Over Weekend Keeps Nanaimo Fire Rescue Crews Busy

One resident sent to hospital, Two Displaced

Summary

Crews arrived on scene at the 1600 block of Bowen Road to find heavy flames showing on the front side of a duplex. Crews did a quick knockdown and preliminary search. All residents were out of the building. During their search they did find a dog in the upstairs bedroom which they rescued and it was transported to the Animal Emergency Clinic by the RCMP.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to unit of origin while keeping the fire from spreading to other duplex blocks that were nearby. One resident was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and the others were checked out by BCAS and determined to be fine. Two were displaced and received assistance through the City of Nanaimo Community Assistance Program. The remaining residents were able to stay in their units.
