Rapid attack to structure fire by Nanaimo Fire Rescue prevents spread to homes.

Quick response and favourable weather conditions minimized damage.

Summary

At approximately 3:00AM this morning, Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews responded to a reported structure fire on Cilaire Drive. Heavy fire and smoke were present at the front of the house upon arrival with additional homes exposed. Crews used several hose streams to extinguish the fire which involved 5 vehicles and a boat in the driveway. The fire caused minor damage to the exterior of the home and one neighbouring residence. However, the vehicles suffered extensive damage.

Four engines, one Assistant Chief, Community Assistance Program (ESS) and a Fire Prevention Officer attended the incident which was about 2 ½ hours in duration. Residents of the two homes were evacuated temporarily as the crews worked with 6 residing in one home and 6 in the other. There were no injuries and all residents were able to return to their homes after crews checked them for any fire extension. The one home had insurance while the other home did not have content insurance. NFR Fire Prevention Officers are investigating this morning along with RCMP. Additional information will follow as it becomes available.

Quotes

"According to Assistant Chief Ron Dawley, the crews arrived to what appeared to be a fully involved structure fire with intense heat and dense smoke. Fortunately for all those involved the direction of the wind aided in the suppression efforts. Had there been different environmental factors the damage could have been much more extensive to neighbouring homes."
