Nanaimo Fire Rescue assists occupants to escape structure fire

Quick response helped minimize damage.

Summary

Crews arrived on scene to a reported structure fire in the 300 Block of Hecate Street. Upon arrival, light smoke was showing from the roof and top floor. Crews were advised that people were still in the house. One occupant had escaped and one occupant was found in the upper floor window unable to escape due to heavy smoke and was rescued by a firefighter down a ladder. While this was occurring, an elderly female was assisted out from the back of the home. All three were transported to NRGH with smoke inhalation.

In addition, 5 kittens and 1 dog were retrieved from the home. 5 residents in total resided in the house and 2 received assistance through the Community Assistance program. While the other 3 residents were able to return to their suites, the remainder of the house was heavily damaged by smoke.
