Beban Park Pool and Weight Room to Close for Annual Maintenance and Upgrades
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed July 14, 2014 2:00 PM
Summary
The Beban Park pool and weight room will close for just over a month for annual maintenance starting Sunday, July 27 and will reopen on Tuesday, September 2. In order to keep the facilities running at their best, it is necessary to close them once a year to maintain areas that can only be accessed when they are empty.
Work being done in the pool this year includes converting from chlorine gas to chlorine pucks, retro-fitting the sauna and steam room, replacing filters, maintaining the pumps, cleaning and grouting the tanks, removing the pirate ship play feature and replacing the stirling roof top unit over the leisure pool. The weight room will see two new pieces of equipment, repainting, equipment maintenace and mirror replacements.
The City aims to keep shutdowns as short as possible, and schedules them during the summer months when outdoor activities are the focus for many people.
Beban Park pool and weight room will also be closed for the duration of the BC Summer Games taking place in Nanaimo from Thursday, July 17 to Sunday, July 20.
Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and Westwood Lake will be open for the public's enjoyment during both the maintenance and BC Summer Games shutdowns at Beban Park. Please note all facilities are closed on Labour Day, Monday, September 1.
Link to Strategic Plan: The Beban pool and weight room maintenance shutdown support the Asset Management priority in the 2012-2015 Corporate Strategic Plan.

- It takes a few days just to empty the pool before work can begin.
- The Pirate Ship is being removed because it has reached the end of its life. The footings that hold the structure to the pool floor are rusted and deteriorating and many of its features are out dated.
