New vision for Tourism Nanaimo underway
Tourism in Nanaimo will soon take on a different form with the kick off of an engagement process to determine how the industry will market the city and its amenities. A leadership committee will also be formed with members from the tourism sector. The process is expected to take several months and, in the meantime, destination marketing and development services for Nanaimo will temporarily be taken over by Tourism Vancouver Island.

Floating platform, outdoor rink planned for Hometown Hockey
Swy-A-Lana Lagoon will be transformed into a floating platform for a variety of potential activities for the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour stop the week of February 20. After the event, the floating docks will be moved to the Brechin Boat Ramp, Brechin Rowing Dock, Diver Lake Park and Colliery Dam Park. The project cost of the docks is $271,000.

Nanaimo will soon be home to a seasonal outdoor ice rink. At an estimated initial cost of $200,000 for the rental of cooling equipment and purchase of the ice mat, the rink is planned as an activity for the Rogers hometown Hockey Tour and will be a permanent addition for years to come.

City preps for emergencies
The City is making plans to ensure services to the public continue in the event of an emergency or business interruption. A consultant will be hired to work with staff to develop and implement a business continuity plan. The cost of the plan is expected to be upwards of $125,000.
