NEWS RELEASE - Distributed October 27, 2025 1:30 PM
Summary
From 1990 and continuing through today, Brian Cornborough has been an extremely active volunteer in Nanaimo. In recognition of his 35 years of service to our community, Nanaimo City Council voted unanimously on Monday, Oct. 20 at the In Camera Council Meeting to award Mr. Cornborough with the Patron of the City award.
The Patron/Companion of the City award honours an individual (Patron) or group (Companion) for their extraordinary contributions to Nanaimo’s community, through selfless volunteerism and/or through outstanding achievements that bring a great benefit to Nanaimo. A recipient’s acts of service will have had a significant and positive impact on the livability and well-being of the city.
Mr. Cornborough, the 10th recipient of the Patron/Companion of the City award, began volunteering with the Nanaimo Cancer Society and Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign. He has since been actively involved with Nanaimo & District Youth Soccer, the Nanaimo Lions Club, the Nanaimo Citizens on Patrol Society, the Vancouver Island Exhibition board and security team, Nanaimo Minor Softball Association, and Crime Stoppers Central Vancouver Island, where he currently serves as president. He is also Vice-President of the Crime Stoppers of BC Board.
Patron of the City is the most recent of many awards that Brian has been named for in honour of his service to Nanaimo. Some of his notable awards include the RCMP’s VI Brooke Memorial Award (2006), the RCMP Officer in Charge Certification of Appreciation (2015) and the Nanaimo Sport Achievement “The Hero in You” award (2023).
Mr. Cornborough has represented Nanaimo beyond its city boundaries, especially with Citizen’s on Patrol Canada (COPA). He organized five annual conferences and often assisted as a leader in other municipalities with their program growth. Mr. Cornborough wrote and published the book “Time Well Spent” about the Nanaimo Citizens on Patrol Program.
Brian Cornborough will be officially recognized as Patron of the City at a Nanaimo City Council Meeting in December.
Link to Strategic Plan: Recognizing outstanding citizens and groups who give their time to make our city great supports Council's commitment to community well being and building a healthy Nanaimo.
