Emergency Preparedness Week is May 4 to May 10, 2025
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed April 30, 2025 10:00 AM
Summary
Being prepared is important and something the whole family can do. With Emergency Preparedness Week taking place from May 4 to May 10, the City of Nanaimo is encouraging residents to prepare for an emergency by making a kit, drafting a plan and signing up for the City's Voyent Alert! emergency notification system.
This year’s theme, “In it Together,” highlights the importance of collective action. While we can’t prevent natural disasters, we can reduce their impact by being ready. Emergencies can happen anytime, and being prepared helps protect yourself, your loved ones and your community.
Here are three simple steps everyone can take:
- Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare
- Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do
- Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency
To stay informed during emergencies, residents are also encouraged to sign up for Voyent Alert!, the City’s emergency notification system. This free tool will send real-time alerts to your phone or device when it matters most.
For more information about how you can prepare for emergencies and to make a kit, visit www.nanaimo.ca/goto/emergencykit or the Province of BC website www.preparedbc.ca.
