City of Nanaimo names its two new Automated Garbage Trucks

Mommy and Trash-O-Saurus Rex are the winning names

The City of Nanaimo held an official naming ceremony Wednesday to unveil the winners of the Name the Garbage Truck contest. With 1,300 total votes cast from the public, the winning names were Mommy and Trash-O-Saurus Rex. Shortlisted from around 1,500 submissions, the winning names were put forth by two young Nanaimo residents; Nathan aged 4 and Hudson aged 2.

The competition winners along with their families were invited to the Public Works yard yesterday for the official ceremony and were welcomed by Senior Manager of Public Works John Elliot who said "These trucks will proudly bear their new names for their whole life here at the City of Nanaimo".

Charlotte Davis, manager of Sanitation and Recycling said "When the new trucks roll out the gates on October 23, it will be an exciting day for residents and refuse collectors. I am excited for residents to be able to put yard waste in their new green bins and I hope they will recycle more now they have easy to use blue carts".

The names were unveiled by Mayor Bill McKay and City CAO Tracy Samra to a big round of applause.

"The naming ceremony has been a great way to engage residents in the new Sort Toss Roll program" said John Elliot and when Joe Bassanello, Refuse Collector, was asked what he thought, he said "I think the new names are cool and its great to see the kids out here today having some fun".
