The preliminary results from the 2017 By-Election show Sheryl Armstrong to be the frontrunner with 3,611 votes cast for her. A total of 7,390 votes were cast. Official results will be declared Wednesday, July 12.

More RCMP officers for Nanaimo
Nanaimo will get three new RCMP officers and two new Police Services employees.
Linley Valley contributors recognized
Upper lake view trail in Linley Valley-Cottle Lake Park will be renamed Patterson Way in memory of Bill and Joan Patterson whose generous donation of $100,000 to the purchase of the park spurred more donations from the community. Bickerton Bluffs in honour of the family who live near the rocks bluffs on the western edge of the park and have watched over and looked after the property. Two contributor signs at the Rick City and Burma Road entrances to the park to recognize those who made donations to the purchase of the park.
Old City businesses agree to pay improvement levy
A total of 34 of 62 businesses in the Old City Quarter area voted in favour of a Business Improvement Area levy. The bylaw to impose the levy was adopted in May.

Hotel planned for 100 Gordon Street
100 Gordon Street will be sold to PEG Development for $750,000 where plans are being made to build a hotel.

Council endorsed an application to the Age-Friendly British Columbia program to recognize efforts made in Nanaimo to improve accessibility and foster social inclusion for older persons.

Reviewing development for water district lands
Staff will review options and seek public input to develop a portion of the old water district lands located at 1150 Nanaimo Lakes Road. The review will also look at providing affordable housing along the eastern edge of the property fronting Harewood Mines Road.

Removing old fire hall bell tower
A Heritage Alteration Permit was approved for the removal of the bell tower on the Old Fire Hall No. 2 at 34 Nicol Street. The tower was constructed in 1992 and is in poor condition. The removal will bring the look of the building back to what it was when it was built in 1914.

Staff will being reviewing the bylaw for off-street parking regulations to update them so they reflect the goals of the Official Community Plan and Transportation Master Plan. This review will include public consultation.

Grow ops addressed
The properties located at 223 Irwin Street and 111 Haliburton Street received a notice on the property title for the illegal construction for a marijuana grow op. A Do Not Occupy order is in effect for the property until a permit to repair and upgrade the illegal construction is completed.
Construction completed without permit
The property at 833 Douglas Avenue received a notice on title for construction completed without a building permit.

A property located at 3583 Hammond Bay Road will see new retaining walls with a variance to increase the height.

The property located at 5350 Metral Drive received a notice on the property title for failing to conform to the City’s building bylaw for not registering a secondary suite.
Nanaimo’s Cultural Plan for 2014-2020 received an update with the addition of supporting a multi-use community arts space.
J.A.M.Z. Society will receive the balance of the 2017 Downtown Event Grant funding of $1,280 for a Summertime Music Series.
The annual Teenfest event will receive a $7,000 grant with $4,000 coming from the Grants Advisory Committee Contingency Fund and $3,000 from Council’s Contingency Fund.
A new User Fees and Charges Policy will come into effect for City operations.
