Taking Environmental Responsibility

Environmental Framework

City Council has set a key goal within its 2019-2022 Strategic Plan for the City to take greater Environmentally Responsibility. The City is working toward this goal through the following:

  • Climate Action: The City will meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets as a community and show climate leadership corporately. The City will also work to prepare for a changing climate.
  • Protection and Restoration of Natural Spaces: The City will protect and enhance the ecological diversity found within the City through the purchase and restoration or our parks; the development process on private land, and by working with the community to learn about and restore the natural spaces of the City.
  • Zero Waste and Energy Management: The City will provide the services needed (in collaboration with the Regional District of Nanaimo) to work toward a zero waste future. It will also demonstrate corporate leadership through excellent energy and waste management practice.
  • Environmental Health: The City will protect the public from potential environmental harm, provide opportunity to access local food, and provide healthier travel options for getting out and enjoying the environment.

These actions collectively help the City become a more resilient community that is better able to respond to the challenges of a changing climate.
