Project Description

UPDATE:

The borehole drilling component of the work (Phase 1) is now complete however we are waiting on a specialist grouting contractor to consolidate the void deep under the roadway. They will be mobilizing to site the week of April 8 and are expected to complete the grouting in 5 days. The current schedule has the road re-opened by the end of April.

Current schedule

The 700 block of Victoria Road is underlain by shallow abandoned coal mine workings associated with the Douglas Mine. The mine worked the Douglas Coal Seam, at a depth of approximately 7m from the above ground surface in the area. On January 13, 2024 surface settlement was observed on part of the roadway and shoulder and the area of concern fenced off.

Background review and subsequent investigation completed by the City has confirmed the presence of shallow abandoned mine workings that are in a partially collapsed condition in the immediate vicinity of the subsidence feature.

The repair work will be completed in 2 phases. The void hazard will be mitigated by injection of grout into the void space to prevent further collapse and impact to the adjacent utilities and road surface. Following this, the road and shoulder will be rebuilt to the previous condition.

General Considerations

• Typical hours of work for this project will be Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Work after hours or on weekends is not expected to be required.

• Victoria Road will remain closed from Rainer Street to Needham Street until approximately late April when repairs are completed.

• If you live in the area and have young children, please advise them of the dangers of construction and the limited visibility of heavy equipment and trucks
