Breaching Orca is made out of new and reclaimed metal materials, all of which were fit together by the artist to create this sculptural assemblage. McMahon often creates representations of west coast wildlife, frequently returning to whales as his subject. This artwork was selected for the City of Nanaimo’s Public Art program in 2011. City Council accepted Breaching Orca as a donation to the City of Nanaimo’s public art collection in 2014.

Carl Sean McMahon was raised on Salt Spring Island and he continues to operate his studio there. He attended Victoria College of Art and the University of Victoria where he studied different artistic disciplines including sculpture, painting, digital media and video production. McMahon established his studio, CSM Gallery & Studio, to further the development of his art, focusing on his metal sculptures.
