Road Construction Project Update

Summary

Throughout summer, several construction projects will take place in Nanaimo. Some projects are currently underway and others will be starting in the coming weeks.

Fortis BC has begun installation of a gas main along Highway 19A from Mostar Road to Aulds Road. Expect single lane traffic southbound on the highway.

Starting Tuesday, June 24 new water mains and services will be installed on Harwell Road, from Jingle Pot to Woodthrush Road. Detours will be in place to direct traffic to Calder Road from 7:00 am - 5:30 pm, Monday to Thursday.

A new sidewalk installation on Hammond Bay Road between Tom's Turnabout and Dunn Place is scheduled to start next week. Once completed, this section of Hammond Bay Road will get repaved. Single lane alternating traffic can be expected.

Construction of Linley Valley Drive from Turner Road starts in July and includes a new roundabout at Turner Road. Drivers can expect single lane alternate traffic and short-term road closures and are encouraged to use Uplands Drive to Hammond Bay as an alternate route. The new road will not encroach into the wetland.

The main vehicle entrance into Neck Point Park, Morningside Drive, will be closed from August 5 to September 1 for a joint project between the City of Nanaimo and Regional District of Nanaimo.

Link to Strategic Plan: The water main project supports the City of Nanaimo's commitment to asset management. The sidewalk improvements and construction of Linley Valley Drive support the City of Nanaimo's commitment to improved transportation and mobility.

Key Points

  • Drivers are urged to use extra caution when driving through construction zones; be aware of on-site workers; obey posted construction signs; and follow the directions of traffic control personnel.
  • To get to your destination on time, commuters on affected routes are encouraged to leave a few minutes early or find an alternate route.
  • Local businesses in construction zones are always accessible and open for business.
