Hometown Hockey coming to Nanaimo
Nanaimo is one of 24 communities across Canada to be included as a stop on the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour. The tour will arrive in Nanaimo the weekend of February 25-26 but a number of activities for the community have been planned by the Local Organizing Committee for February 20 through February 27. Funding in the amount of $122,750 has been set aside for the activities surrounding this event.

Jean Burns building coming down
A downtown heritage building will be demolished. Also known as the Jean Burns Building, it was severely damaged from a fire this past March.

Grant sought to cover sewer, infrastructure program
Chase River will have a new wastewater pump station built. The project is estimated to cost $4.515 million. A grant application has been submitted to the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund to cover a large percentage of this project along with part of the $1.6 million cost of an Infrastructure Condition Assessment Program for the City.

Community Wellness programs get grant boost
The City received an Island Health grant of $89,000 via the Regional District of Nanaimo to deliver Community Wellness programs. The programs will focus on five public health modifiable risk factors – unhealthy eating, overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful alcohol use.

Nanaimo development update
The Shima Karate School got the go ahead to relocate to the old East Wellington Library location at 3032 Barons Road with a variance to reduce the required parking spaces from 22 to 10. The school will also provide an additional 12 spaces in an adjacent parking lot for the use of its patrons.
