Waterfront governance explored
Council is supporting the Greater Nanaimo Waterfront Association's efforts to work with the Snuneymuxw First Nation, City of Nanaimo, Regional District of Nanaimo, marine industry and community at large to form a not-for-profit society tasked with becoming the official steward of Nanaimo's water lot properties.

Heritage grants awarded
The Ashlar Lodge Masonic Temple located at 101 Commercial Street received a Heritage Façade Grant totaling $14,999.25 to restore the exterior of the building.
Section 9 a
The owners of the Young/Pargeter residence located at 45 Milton Street received a Heritage Home Grant totaling $2,500 to install a gutter system and storm winders. The home is listed under the City’s Heritage Register.
Section 9 b
New procedures for property maintenance
An update to the property maintenance bylaw passed three readings. The update will put operational enforcement into the hands of bylaw officers and will allow staff to work with property owners to bring their properties into compliance. The bylaw update also includes an appeal process which will be heard by Council.

Development around Nanaimo
Renovations and a new deck at 3100 Hammond Bay Road will go ahead with variances to reduce the watercourse setback.
Section 9 d
A variance to reduce the watercourse setback for a house and deck at 3200 Singleton Road was approved.
Section 9 e
A subdivision at 1650 College Drive got the go ahead with a variance to reduce the watercourse setback as well as 1.1 hectares of land being dedicated as parkland that will connect Darough Creek Park with Westwood Lake Park.

5190 Lone Lynx Lane will see a new house with variances to the maximum building and perimeter wall height increased.
Section 9 g
Council approved the construction of an accessory building at 4155 Jingle Pot Road with variances to increase the floor area and building height.
Section 9 h
An application to amend the Official Community Plan to change the designation of a property in Brechin Hill from Neighbourhood to Corridor passed first and second readings. The change in the OCP will see a development at 2020 Estevan Road consisting of a five-storey mixed-use building, which will include a church space and multi-family residential building consisting of both market rental and affordable rental units.

A 10-unit row housing development got one step closer to a reality with Council passing first and second reading in rezoning 3598 Norwell Drive from Single Dwelling Residential to Row House Residential.

A rezoning application to designate 5264 Sherbourne Drive as Duplex Residential from Single Dwelling Residential passed first and second readings.
Section 9 k
Plans for a six-storey, 90-room hotel at 15 Front Street moved forward with approval of a 10-year tax exemption under the Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw.

Covenant goes to public hearing
A proposed amendment to a covenant placed on the property at 4951 Jordan Avenue will go to public hearing. The changes would include the removal of use restrictions as well as lot consolidation and landscaping requirements.
