By-election date proposed
The date of the upcoming by-election has been proposed as July 8, 2017 with an expected cost of $130,000 to $150,000.

Automation set for fall start
Automated collection will be coming to Nanaimo soon. Collections will be rolled out in two phases, the central area of Nanaimo will be automated in the fall of 2017 and the rest of Nanaimo will be done in Summer 2018. The new service will include the collection of yard waste. Residents will be provided with a set of three wheeled carts.

Improving residents’ online experience
Residents looking to view Council agendas and meetings on the City website will soon have an improved experience once a new application, called Escribe is implemented. Rather than downloading a whole agenda, users will have the ability to download certain segments. And, the experience viewing meetings as they are live streamed will be improved.

Registering for recreation programs will be easier thanks to new a new software program being implemented in next year. The software, provided by PerfectMind, will cost $450,000 ($125,000 to implement and $65,000/year software fee) for a five-year contract. Class, the current software used for program registration will not be supported by the provider, Active Network after December of this year.

Wrapping up the referendum
The final results of the March 11 referendum found that 35.3 per cent of voters turned out to vote and 80.3 per cent chose not to support borrowing funds to build an events centre. Council rescinded the Loan Authorization bylaw related to the referendum.

The process of winding down the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation continues with steps underway to end the office lease at 38 Victoria Crescent, also known as SquareOne.
