November 1, 2023 Special Council Summary

Council directed staff to reallocate up to $230,000 from the Asset Retirement Obligation project surplus to fund warming centre services approximately between November 14, 2023 and March 31, 2024, 7 days per week.

Council authorized the Mayor and Corporate Officer to enter into a service agreement with Risebridge Society to provide warming centre services during identified service gaps and to mitigate impacts on the surrounding neighbourhood through good neighbourhood agreement requirements.

Council directed staff to issue an expression of interest to seek organizations who are willing and able to run an additional warming centre in Nanaimo and for additional funds to be identified if an additional site is found.

Council requested for correspondence to be sent to Premier Eby outlining the continued and severe health needs of unsheltered populations in Nanaimo and the community-wide need for provincial funding that matches the scale of the crisis, for programs and shelter space for unsheltered populations in Nanaimo.
