Nanaimo Puts Food Trucks on the Menu!

Applications for a Mobile Food Vending Business Licence can be made March 1st.

Council has recently endorsed a new food truck and trailer policy, and approved a business licence bylaw amendment, to allow entrepreneurs to operate food trucks in designated on-street parking areas and city park locations in Nanaimo.

Strategic Link: The creation of a food truck policy helps promote local business development.

Key Points

  • Food truck businesses can apply March 1, 2016 to the City of Nanaimo for a Business Licence as a Mobile Food Vendor that will allow them to operate on city streets in designated parking spaces and in select city parks.
  • Council has approved more than 12 on-street parking spaces for food truck businesses (primarily downtown) and 24 spaces in park locations throughout the city for food truck or food trailer vendors.
  • To ensure successful implementation of this new policy, the business licence bylaw amendment allows for a one-year review of the food truck licensing process and the locations.

"I am very pleased with the progress on this very exciting initiative. I want to give special thanks to Bruce Anderson and Tamera Rogers in our planning department, the Chamber of Commerce, and those within the industry who worked especially hard to bring this much anticipated policy to life!"
