Curbside Basics
The City provides curbside collection services to about 32,000 households within Nanaimo. This service is available to eligible single-family homes and up to fourplexes.
Each home is assigned recycling, compost and garbage carts. The carts stay with the property, so if you move, you leave them behind for the next residents.
Curbside collection is not provided to apartment buildings, strata developments with more than four units, or mobile home parks. If you live in one of these housing types, please contact your building manager or strata representative to learn about the collection services available to you.
Tips for a successful pickup
-
SORT materials & minimize your waste
- Use the guide on your cart lids to help sort common items correctly.
- For more detailed information, visit the Recycling, Organics, and Garbage webpages.
- Find out where items belong by using the What Goes Where recycling tool on our webpage, or download the free Nanaimo Recycles app on Google Play or the Apple App Store.
-
PUT carts out on collection day
Help keep wildlife safe by putting your carts out by 8 am on your scheduled collection day, not the night before.
-
SPACE your carts
- Leave 1 metre (3 feet) between carts.
- Keep carts 1 metre (3 feet) away from vehicles and other obstacles.
- Ensure 3 metres (10 feet) of overhead clearance from trees, basketball hoops and other overhanging objects.
-
POINT carts so the lid opens into the street
- Arrows on top of the lids need to point towards the middle of the street
- Make sure the lids are completely closed
-
KEEP sidewalks clear
- Place carts near the curb.
- Don't block sidewalks, bike lanes, driveways or traffic.
Stay safe
Thank you for helping make collection day safe for everyone. Please keep a safe distance from the truck while carts are being emptied. The truck's mechanical arms require clear space around the carts to complete the collection safely.
