Council consider Core Service Review recommendations for Automated collection

At Monday night’s Council Meeting, Council instructed Staff to review the recommendations of this year’s Core Service Review report regarding the implementation of Automated residential waste collection.

A small roll out of automated collection in the Central area of Nanaimo was initially planned for November this year. However, with a Core Service Review recommendation to fully automate all curbside collection in the City to increase cost savings, Council has asked staff to look at different options of rolling out this program. Staff plan to present Council with some new options for a broader roll out strategy in August.

Automated collection is still the future of waste collection in the City of Nanaimo. The Core Services Review pointed out that a large-scale initial roll out of the technology would mean a higher cost savings in terms of purchasing trucks and wheeled carts.
Automated collection is a more user friendly system of waste collection for both residents and workers. The wheeled carts make sorting and containing waste more convenient for residents and also reduces injuries to Refuse Collectors.
The automated collection service will use new trucks with automated arms. The automated arms grasp specially designed wheeled carts and empty them into the truck.
