Construction season now in full swing
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed June 18, 2015 2:30 PM
Summary
Construction season in Nanaimo is underway. There are a number of City projects already started, with more projects to start in the coming months. Drivers can plan their commutes and avoid delays by visiting the City's Current Construction Projects website.
Some current major projects underway include:
From April to December, the Hospital Area Transportation and Utility Upgrade project. Single lane alternating traffic along Boundary Avenue, Boundary Crescent, Dufferin Crescent, Waddington Avenue and Townsite Road can be expected with some short term road closures with temporary detours.
From June to September, Neyland Road Water Main Replacement. Single lane alternating traffic along Neyland Drive can be expected.
Other major projects to start later in the year include:
From July to September, Wakesiah Avenue Culvert Replacement. Single lane alternating traffic between Second Street and Third Street can be expected with a full road closure in August with vehicle access limited to local residents.
From September to June 2016, Northfield/Boundary Intersection Improvements. Significant traffic delays can be expected from this construction. Traffic management plan preparation and detour planning is underway to mitigate these impacts.
Link to Strategic Plan: The water and sewer projects support the City of Nanaimo's commitment to asset management. The road, sidewalk and bike lane improvements support the City of Nanaimo's commitment to improved transportation and mobility.
Key Points
- Drivers are urged to use extra caution when driving through construction zones; be aware of on-site workers; obey posted construction signs; and follow the directions of traffic control personnel.
- Local businesses in construction zones are always accessible and open for business.
- To get to your destination on time, commuters on affected routes are encouraged to leave a few minutes early or find an alternate route.
Quotes
"I want to thank residents for their patience during this construction season. The City of Nanaimo cares about the safety of our employees, our contractors, our residents, our businesses and our drivers on Nanaimo roads. If everyone does their part, plans ahead and respects work zones, we will get through this year's construction season safely and successfully."
