Summary
At its May 26th meeting the Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan was adopted by City Council. This strategic plan will help Nanaimo shift towards a more sustainable transportation system over the next 25 years while supporting a growing and vibrant community. The Plan's direction will guide transportation policies, priorities and investments across the transportation network, including:
• Coordinate land use and transportation planning to create better neighbourhoods for walking and cycling that can be effectively serviced by transit. • Making walking and cycling comfortable ways to move throughout more parts of the City for people of all ages and abilities. • Increasing the quality, convenience and accessibility of transit. • Creating streets that are comfortable for everyone while seeking to reduce our dependency on cars. • Improving strategic connections for people, goods and services that support our economy between Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver and the rest of British Columbia.
Through these strategies the Plan seeks to double the percentage of trips we make by walking, cycling and transit and reduce our dependence on the car.
