Property tax deadline is coming soon

Summary

The due date for City of Nanaimo property tax payments and, for those eligible, to claim a Home Owner Grant, is Tuesday July 4, 2023.

Property owners can make their payments in the following ways:

  • Through their bank - online, over the phone or in person.
  • In person at the Service and Resource Centre (411 Dunsmuir St) or by using the drop box located outside, which is available all day, every day.

Home Owner Grants can be claimed through the Province of BC's website (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/property-taxes/annual-property-tax/home-owner-grant). Residents who are eligible for the grant must claim it each year to avoid penalties.

Key Points

  • Tuesday July 4, 2023 is the deadline to pay property taxes and claim the Home Owner Grant.
  • Provincial legislation requires the City to apply a penalty on any outstanding 2023 tax amounts. A late payment penalty of two per cent will be applied to payments received after July 4, and an additional eight per cent will be applied to ones made after August 31.
  • To avoid lineups, electronic options are available for payments.
  • Home Owner Grants are claimed through the Province of BC.

Quotes

"Avoid late payment penalties by paying your property taxes and claiming your home owner grant by July 4. Our Revenue Services staff are here to assist you in making a payment in person. However, there are also many options available to make a payment at any hour of the day, including online through your bank or by dropping a cheque off in the drop box located outside the Service and Resource Centre."
