Nanaimo Fire Rescue partners with VIU for Inaugural FireSmart Weekend

Summary

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and Vancouver Island University and are holding its inaugural FireSmart weekend April 9th and 10th at the VIU campus. With the assistance from FireSmart Canada and grant money from the UBCM, staff and students of the Universities Forestry program will take part this weekend in FireSmarting forested areas near campus buildings. The City of Nanaimo was recently recognized as a Fire Smart Community and this is one initiative as a result.

All residents can have a FireSmart home and Nanaimo Fire Rescue wants to encourage all its citizens to participate. Guidelines are available that can assist property owners in helping them to slow down or prevent the spread of wildfire on their properties by visiting fire.nanaimo.ca or www.firesmartcanada.ca In addition, Nanaimo Fire Rescue can support FireSmart community champions to assist them in establishing FireSmart programs in their neighbourhoods.
