Celebrate Earth Week
Changes to this year's event
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed April 17, 2015 9:00 AM
Summary
The City of Nanaimo is partnering with Nanaimo Area Land Trust (NALT) for a number of events taking place during Earth Week.
On Tuesday, April 21 at 7:00 pm, renowned ethnoecologist and ethnobiologist, Nancy Turner will present "Earth's Blanket - Traditional teachings for sustainable living" at the Bowen Park Auditorium. Admission for this presentation is by donation.
On Earth Day itself, City staff will be volunteering their time to help in an ongoing ecological restoration program to remove English Ivy from Bowen Park.
This year, in place of the Wild Foods Festival, the City and NALT will be hosting a Community inter-ACTION on Food Security on Sunday, April 26 from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm at Bowen Park. This is a workshop on local food sustainability and security which will include a Wild Foods Lunch prepared by Nanaimo Foodshare.
Link to Strategic Plan: Working with NALT and Nanaimo Foodshare on Earth Week events contributes to the Community Building Partnerships priority and Environmental Responsibility pillar in the Corporate Strategic Plan.
Key Points
- Earth Day is on Wednesday, April 22. Events for the week include: a presentation by Nancy Turner on Tuesday, April 21; an ivy pull work party on Wednesday, April 22 and a Community inter-ACTION on Food Security on Sunday, April 26.
- Registration is required for the Community inter-ACTION on Food Security workshop and lunch. Those wishing to attend can register through the City's website or by calling 250-756-5200.
- The Wild Foods Festival/Earth day Celebration was cancelled this year due to an early spring that limited what wild ingredients will be available to the chefs for the event. As well some chefs and one anchor participant were unavailable.
Quotes
"While it is unfortunate the Wild Foods Festival will not be happening this year. We are nonetheless looking forward to co-hosting a new event dedicated to discussions around local food sustainability and security along with two other great Earth Week events we think the community will really benefit from."
