Be prepared for stormy weather this weekend

Nanaimo is expected to get a lot of rain this weekend, make sure you are prepared. 

  • To help avoid flooding during heavy rain, please clear leaves and debris from catch basins at storm drains near your property. 
  • Need sand bags? The Public Works Yard at 2020 Labieux Road has sand and bags for filling, make sure to bring a shovel.
  • If flooding occurs, please report it to Public Works at 250-758-5222. Learn more about how you can help prevent flooding on the Flood Control page
  • Make sure you have an emergency kit with at least seven days worth of supplies in the event of a power outage. Learn more on the Personal Preparedness page.
  • Please use caution in Nanaimo's parks during stormy weather. Trails, boardwalks, bridges, stairs and playground equipment can become slippery and hazardous when there is rain. They can be littered with debris and even tree branches during and after windstorms.
  • After a rain storm, rivers can experience high flow conditions, so please exercise extreme caution when using trailways along riverbanks.
  • Avoid venturing in wooded areas in Nanaimo's parks and trails during periods of high winds.
  • To report any concerns or issues in Nanaimo's parks and trails, please call 250-756-5200 or email parksandrecreation@nanaimo.ca.
  • In the case of extreme storm weather that may warrant an emergency response or major closures, alerts will be sent out on the City's emergency alert system. Learn more and sign-up for emergency notifications at on the Emergency Alert System page.
