Snow updates for Family Day weekend
A reminder to all residents and businesses to clear the sidewalks of snow and ice in front of your property.
For up to date weather forecasts and advisories visit the weather information pages on Environment Canada's website.
Parks and Recreation:
- All pool and arena drop-in and registered programs are scheduled to run over the weekend, weather permitting.
- All recreation facilities will remain open, weather permitting, with the exception of on Monday when the Beban Park, Bowen and Oliver Woods facilities will be closed for the Family Day holiday.
- A special Family Day swim with take place in the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre on Monday from 12-6 pm and, over in Nanaimo Ice Centre, two Family Skates, two Stick’n’ Pucks sessions and a Parent & Tot skate session are scheduled. Check recreation.nanaimo.ca for information on times.
- If any closures or cancellations occur due to adverse weather conditions, we will update on the City’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.
The public is reminded that trails, boardwalks, bridges, stairs and playground equipment can become slippery and hazardous when there is snow and ice. Please take care and walk with caution through the City's parks. To report any concerns or issues in Nanaimo's parks and trails, please contact Nanaimo Parks & Recreation at 250-756-5200 or email parksandrecreation@nanaimo.ca.
Public Works:
- Sanitation crews will be out revisiting areas that were challenging to get to this past Thursday and Friday. They will be attempting to collect recycling and organics from areas that weren’t accessible on the regular collection day. With the snowbanks piling up at the side of the roads, carts that are normally placed on the sidewalk are not often reachable. In these instances, please place your cart in the roadway in front your driveway.
- Stay up to date with your garbage/recycling collection route by downloading the Nanaimo Recycles app. You will receive notifications to your phone of interruptions in your collection schedule. Find the download links on the Garbage and Recycling Calendar page on the City website.
- Crews will be working to clear roads through Friday night and on Saturday in residential areas.
- Do you have a catch basin in front of your property? Watch this video to see how you can help prevent flooding when the snow melts.
