Sustainability

The primary functions of the Sustainability section are:

  • Oversees community-wide energy management, climate action (mitigation) and adaptation (resiliency), and other environmental programs through the development and implementation of plans, programs, and other actions.
  • Develops and administers climate action and environmental grants and rebate programs.
  • Builds and supports community-wide education, awareness, and actions to address climate action and adaptation.
  • Reports regularly on corporate and community sustainability actions and progress.
  • Leads development and maintenance of a City Plan monitoring strategy that includes confirmation of Targets and Indicators based on Nanaimo’s Doughnut Economics framework to monitor progress towards City Plan goals.
  • Develops and implements plans to increase awareness of, and participation in, various energy conservation and demand side management programs, focusing on residential and commercial sectors.
