CAO addresses Council

Ms. Samra made a statement about the progress the City is making and the need for the Mayor and CAO to work together to serve the residents of Nanaimo.

Bowen Road land for sale

Surplus City-owned land at 2103 Bowen Road is now for sale. The property is appraised at $350,000 and a Request for Offers will be posted to the City website, BC Bid, newspaper and distributed to commercial brokers.

More affordable housing

The property at 1406 Bowen Road will become an affordable housing complex for Indigenous students. Council gave approval to transfer the land from the City to the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre Society and remove a covenant on the property.

Rainbow-coloured sidewalks

The intersection crosswalks at Commercial and Bastion Street will be painted as a rainbow in honour of this year’s Pride Week and Pride parade on June 12.

Samra joins NEDC Board

City of Nanaimo CAO Tracy Samra was appointed a Director of the Board of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation. 

Council will attend the upcoming NEDC Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, May 24.

Development around the City

The new grocery store planned on Bruce Avenue to replace the old Co-Op was given the go ahead to increase the height of the building.

Council approved a reduction in the required number of parking spaces for the shared office complex on 1850 Northfield Road from 76 spaces to 51.

The subdivision of 1285 College Drive into three lots will move forward after council approved changing the minimum lot depth requirement by less than one metre.

Motion carried: Unanimous.

Construction of the new Lowe’s store at North Nanaimo Town Centre is making progress. Council approved a variance allowing signage to extend above the store’s roofline, allowing Lowe’s to install their signs on the outside of the store.

Council approved the installation of a heat pump at 3713 Cavendish Road on the side of the house, rather than the rear.

Trucking routes expanded

The City’s truck route network will now include routes from Boxwood Road to Dufferin Crescent, and Metral Drive to Enterprise Way and Mary Ellen Drive.

Student truck drivers will also be permitted to train on routes from Uplands Drive to Turner Road, and Wakesiah Avenue to Fifth Street.

New lights on Jingle Pot

The crosswalk at Cavendish Boulevard and Jingle Pot Road will have pedestrian warning flashing lights installed. The City and ICBC will split the $15,000 cost.

Heritage Registry updated

An update to the City’s Heritage Registry was presented to Council. Among the updates are the removal of the Harewood School (505 Howard Avenue) and Milton Street Residence (434 Milton Street) from the registry.

District approves Parcel Tax increase

The Regional District of Nanaimo has amended the Regional Parks and Trails Parcel Tax Bylaw so that the Parcel Tax increase will only apply to 2016.
