Work continues on the Midtown Projects; commuters can expect travel delays

Northfield Road between the Parkway and Bowen Road will see traffic disruptions in coming weeks

Summary

The City of Nanaimo will be installing critical underground water infrastructure across municipal roadways next week, this time near the intersection of Northfield Road and Boxwood Road. This complex and necessary work will disrupt traffic. Commuters are encouraged to avoid this area during this time if possible.

  • From May 23 to May 26, there will be alternating lane closures on Northfield Road between Bowen Road and the Parkway, and the traffic signals at the intersection of Northfield and Boxwood will be turned off. Travel through the intersection will be available, but all drivers, pedestrians and cyclists must obey the direction of flag persons on duty.

  • On May 29, westbound traffic on Northfield Road will be reduced to one lane west of Boxwood Road.

  • From May 30 to June 1, Boxwood Road will be closed north of Northfield Road, along with the corresponding left turn lane on Northfield Road. Vehicle access entering and exiting the businesses at 2300 Northfield Road (Petro-Canada and WAVES car wash) will be via their Northfield Road access only.

  • From June 1 to June 9, the northbound lane of Boxwood Road, north of Northfield Road, will be closed, along with the corresponding left turn lane on Northfield Road. Vehicle access entering the businesses at 2300 Northfield Road (Petro-Canada and WAVES car wash) will be via their Northfield Road access only.

Pedestrians are advised to watch for sidewalk closures and follow detour signage and the direction of flagpersons on duty. Cyclists are encouraged to dismount and use sidewalks.

All businesses will remain open and accessible during construction. Please watch for construction signage and direction of flagpersons for assistance with business access.

Construction work will typically take place Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; however, it will expand to 24 hours per day from May 23 to May 26 in order to complete the pipe installation across Northfield Road as quickly as possible and to minimize disruption. Traffic disruptions will remain in affect during non-working hours and weekends.

Please note there will be other significant traffic disruptions required for these projects in the coming months. More details will be provided as the projects progress.

The City thanks residents for their ongoing patience during these important construction projects. Please follow the City's Facebook or Twitter accounts (@cityofnanaimo) and visit the project webpage at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/MidtownGateway for the most current information.
