Sponsorships vital to Maffeo Sutton Playground

Summary

Because of the generous donation from many sponsors, the City of Nanaimo opened the newly expanded Maffeo Sutton Playground on Friday, Oct. 21. This entire playground is designed to be accessible and inclusive for children two to 12 years old.

Phase 2 construction was funded by a grant of $413,300 from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (administered by PacifiCan), $30,000 from the Tire Stewardship of BC for the use of BC Recycled tires and $26,000.00 was donated by the Nanaimo Lions Club for the purchase of the We-Go-Swing. In addition, cedar florets (stumps) were donated by Gogo Cedar Products.

Link to Strategic Plan: Providing playgrounds for children and families of all abilities supports a community that is accessible, inclusive and liveable.

Key Points

  • The new equipment includes Nanaimo's first wheelchair accessible swing, the We-Go-Swing.
  • 1,709 recycled BC tires were used in the rubber surfacing and provides a safe and interactive play surface.
  • The playground features a hand carved cedar canoe playable art feature which was created by Snuneymuxw First Nation Master Carver, Noel Brown.
  • Cedar logs salvaged from Bowen Park were incorporated into the playground for creative nature play. Cedar florets (stumps) create additional climbing features.

Quotes

"I am very excited that the new playground equipment at Maffeo Sutton Park is now open for play and I encourage everyone to come and check it out! The playground is fun for everyone, it's especially great for those with mobility issues and invites inter-generational play, so grandparents can play with their grandchildren. Thank you to the sponsors who made this possible, because of their support we have a fun space right in the heart of our beautiful waterfront."
