Celebrate World Rivers Day in Nanaimo virtually

Summary

The fourth Sunday of September is Rivers Day, a day to celebrate the world's waterways and their importance to all life on earth. This year the event is 40 years old. The City of Nanaimo and several community partners, including the Regional District of Nanaimo - Team WaterSmart, Nanaimo & Area Land Trust (NALT), Nanaimo Science, Snuneymuxw First Nation, Nanaimo Port Authority, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Fishing for Fun and Steek Snorkel, are collaborating to bring a wide array of online events that are happening this week and leading up to the virtual celebration of the official Rivers Day on Sunday, September 27.

Activities for Rivers Day are created around specific themes, including Explore and Observe, Recreate, Connect, Restore, Learn, Respect and Celebrate. Daily online events and learning opportunities are found at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/riversday and on the City of Nanaimo's Facebook Page under the Rivers Day event.

Residents are invited to learn more about the rivers and waterways in our community and how they connect us all by providing drinking water, recreational opportunities, a range of species and ecosystems and how important they are in our culture and history.
