Nanaimo to Host IIHF World Junior Championship Training Camps & Pre-Competition

Nanaimo will welcome athletes, coaches and volunteers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia leading up to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship December 26, 2018 - January 5, 2019. While the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship will be played in Vancouver and Victoria, Nanaimo will host training camps and the pre-competition game December 19.

The City of Nanaimo, Nanaimo Hospitality Association and the Nanaimo Clippers are working closely together to host. “Having Hockey Canada and the International Ice Hockey Federation come to Nanaimo for this world class event is a great accomplishment,” said Dan Brady, Executive Director, Nanaimo Hospitality Association. “It will inspire young players to pursue their dreams.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Nanaimo to host an International hockey event. The training camps and Pre-Competition game will raise our profile on the world stage, and have economic and social impact for Nanaimo” said Ian Thorpe, Acting Mayor, City of Nanaimo.

Nanaimo is no stranger to hosting major hockey events. Nanaimo has been host to Roger’s Hometown Hockey, the Royal Bank Memorial Cup, the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, and the Western Canada Cup Junior A Hockey Championship.

Ten teams will participate with Canada’s National Junior Team playing in Group A with the Czech Republic, Denmark, Russia and Switzerland. The Pre-competition game between Czech Republic and Slovakia will take place at Frank Crane Arena December 19 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $20 per person plus service charges and can be purchased through the Nanaimo Clippers starting November 24.
