Pesticide Use

The City of Nanaimo has been regulating the of cosmetic pesticides since April 2011.

The Pesticide Use Bylaw 2010 No.7102  prohibits the use and / or application of pesticides for maintaining vegetation established for aesthetic and ornamental reasons. Ornamental vegetation includes outdoor trees, lawns, shrubs and similar vegetation planted on residential property and city-owned land.

Pesticide use can negatively affect our natural environment. Using home and garden pesticides is also a “band-aid” solution that can amplify lawn and garden problems, while posing a risk to wildlife and many beneficial insects. Rainfall and over-watering can cause excess pesticides and fertilizers from your lawn and garden to run off via storm drains and into our local watercourses impacting the health of fish and other aquatic organisms. The City is encouraging residents to use healthy garden practices to grow a pesticide-free lawn and garden.
