We were fortunate to have the opportunity to test out an all-electric refuse collection vehicle specifically designed for residential curbside collection. The four-day demonstration provided an opportunity for City staff and operators to evaluate emerging zero-emission collection technology under real-world operating conditions on Nanaimo's residential collection routes.
City operators received hands-on training and operated the truck on active collection routes collecting two days of recycling and two days of solid waste (garbage) to assess its performance, functionality, safety features and operational suitability for municipal waste collection services.

This nifty-looking truck features a fully integrated electric platform, advanced safety technologies, a 360-degree camera system, blind spot detection, collision avoidance systems and telematics capabilities that support condition-based maintenance and fleet management. Throughout the trial, operators noted several positive attributes of the vehicle, including its exceptional turning radius, ease of operation, ergonomic controls, visibility enhancements, reduced operational complexity and low level of noise compared to conventional collection vehicles. Staff also observed that the electric collection system performed effectively throughout the trial period and that battery capacity exceeded the operational requirements encountered during the demonstration.
Even though the demonstration doesn't represent a purchasing decision or commitment by the City, it provided our operators and staff with a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand experience with this emerging technology while we are also redesigning our collection system to further enhance the service level, reduce the cost and the carbon foot print of our services. Information gathered during the trial will be incorporated into a technical evaluation and used to inform future discussions regarding collection program design, fleet replacement planning, sustainability objectives, operating efficiencies and lifecycle considerations.
