Hawthorne Park has become a community gathering hub. Several community barbeques and events have been held here and the neighbourhood has been very active in developing the park. In 2014, neighbourhood volunteers worked with the City in the Partners in Parks (PIP) program to install a playground.

Recently, with the support of a TD Green Streets grant, neighbours helped City staff plant shade trees. Nanaimo was chosen out of 125 applicants for the grant along with 22 other communities across Canada.
