City finances on target
The operating results for the first 6 months of the year were released and show a projected surplus for 2016 of $1.832 million.

40% of the $50 million Capital Projects budget for 2016 has been spent in the first six months of this year. Of the 184 projects slated, 40 are complete, 78 are in progress and 66 have been delayed.

As of the end of June, Council has spent just over $41,000 of their $118,000 expense budget for 2016.

In the second quarter of the year, just over $789,000 was spent on contracts for dust control, brush cutting and asphalt restoration services. Just over $595,000 was spent on direct awards for a variety of products and services including computer software licensing, fencing, pipe, diving boards, glass panels, paving, tennis court resurfacing and chairs.

Financial Plan amended
The City of Nanaimo’s 2016-2020 Financial Plan was amended to include additional expenditures that will be taken out of existing funds and grants for a Community Wildfire Protection Plan, a crosswalk flasher at Cavendish Boulevard and Jingle Pot Road, the New Horizons Seniors Grant Program, Harewood Centennial Skate Park, the passenger ferry Technical Advisory Group, the Beban Park boiler study and a water infrastructure project on Howden Drive.

Beban Pool feedback
Members of the public provided input on the recommendation from the recent Core Services Review to close Beban pool for three months in the summer.

Bylaw for medicinal marijuana
A motion was brought forward to develop a bylaw related to medical marijuana dispensaries. Staff will prepare a report for Council to bring to the upcoming Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in September.

Garbage truck update
The case for automated garbage trucks in Nanaimo continued with two options presented to Council. The first option would take all collection services in-house and require eight new trucks and three carts per household. The second option would have recycling collection services contracted out and require four trucks and two carts per household. With this option, food waste collection would be reduced to every other week.

New College Park water main
A tender will go out for the installation of a new water supply main to the College Park reservoir from Nanaimo Lakes Road.

Baseball travel assistance
The Nanaimo Minor Baseball, Midget Under-18 team will receive a $1,300 grant to help with travel costs to attend the Baseball Canada 2016 U18 National Championships in Quebec.

Members of Council were appointed to the newly reformed committees of Parks, Recreation and Wellness (Councillors Bestwick, Pratt and Thorpe), Culture, Heritage and Social Planning (Councillors Brennan, Fuller, Hong, Yoachim), Design Advisory Panel (Councillor Hong with Councillor Bestwick as an alternate), Public Works and Engineering (Councillors Bestwick, Pratt and Kipp), Community Planning and Development (Councillors Brennan, Fuller and Hong) and Public Safety (Councillors Kipp, Thorpe and Yoachim).
