Practical Proctor Role

The role of the Practical Proctor is to attend evaluations in-person and partner with the Evaluator during live, online practical evaluations, so that they are administered confidentially, in a consistent and impartial manner, in a safe environment using safe operations.

A Practical Proctor is certified in Fire Service Instructor 1 (NFPA 1041), is not involved in the training of the candidate for the process being tested, must be a person who holds a position of trust in a Fire Department, and is approved by VIERA. Positions of trust include, but are not limited to:

  • Fire Chiefs
  • Training Officers

Will you proctor a student if you were involved in their training for the process being tested?

Before Live Online Practical Evaluation

When you receive the Practical Proctor Confirmation email, will you check the email for the following?    

The Schedule of Practical Evaluations with:

    • Date of Practical Evaluation
    • Link to Zoom meeting at scheduled start time
    • Preapproved Remote Testing Site location
    • Name of Practical Evaluator
    • Your name
    • Names of eligible candidates scheduled
    • Time each candidate is scheduled 

Will you arrive 30 minutes early at every preapproved Remote Testing Site location to complete the following?

  • Click Zoom link to join meeting
  • Meet Practical Evaluator on Zoom and together, confirm the following:
  • You can clearly hear and see each other
  • You have not shared the meeting link with anyone
  • There is no one else logged into the meeting
  • The meeting software is not recording
  • You can sit in a location to clearly see the evaluation area and the computer
  • The area is separate from all people not involved in the evaluation
  • The area is quiet and free of distractions
  • There is adequate lighting and ventilation
  • The site is safe and free of obstructions as verified by the Accreditation Manager and indicated in the Remote Testing Site preapproval

During Live Online Practical Evaluation

Will you execute the following:

Take attendance, check IDs and excuse people not on the Schedule of Practical Evaluations received by the Academy? 

Once testing begins, will you remain in the testing area and prevent coaching and/or cheating? 

Confirm that the room is clear of all people and then exit when the Evaluator is ready to deliver confidential feedback to the candidate?
