The City has upgraded the way we clean our pool water

Over the past few years there has been an effort to find a better way to clean the water in the City owned swimming pools.

The two main pools (Nanaimo Aquatic Center and the Beban Pool) were using liquid Chlorine, hydrochloric Acid and UV sterilization as the primary means of disinfection. All worked but also had issues with cost and potential by products caused by the chemicals.

The two products from the company Wapotech that were installed are HydroSan and HydroXan.

HydroSan is a flocculant that causes microscopic impurities to clump together so that they can be filtered out of the water.

HydroXan is a disinfectant that works to significantly remove reductants and improve water clarity.

Combined these chemicals will reduce the need for Chlorine, Reduce the need for acid and reduce the need for sodium bicarbonate.

It also eliminates the need for UV sterilizers resulting in a significant energy savings and replacement costs.

In addition, we installed new modern controllers that are able to accurately measure all of the pool water parameters. These controllers are also able to detect the clarity of the water and modify the speed of the pumps to increase filtration. This process will further reduce power consumption.
