City seeking input on tenant relocation and compensation requirements

Public survey open January 28 to February 18

Summary

The City of Nanaimo is inviting community feedback to help shape requirements for tenant relocation and compensation for renters affected by the redevelopment of rental apartment buildings.

The Rental Tenant Relocation Assistance project aims to create a policy and/or regulatory framework that provides meaningful support for tenants at risk of eviction when rental buildings with four or more units are redeveloped. Many residents in older apartment buildings face vulnerability during redevelopment, with limited affordable alternatives. This initiative seeks to ensure future redevelopment considers renters’ needs and helps those most at risk of displacement.

An online survey to gather information and feedback will be available from Jan. 28 to Feb. 18, 2026. The survey and additional information can be found on Get Involved Nanaimo.

Link to Strategic Plan: Public engagement for this project supports Council’s priority to engage with our community and stakeholders to ensure we are responsive to their needs and concerns.
