Economic Development seeking input on committee makeup
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed May 26, 2017 3:00 PM
Summary
With the City's economic development function moved in-house and a new structure being formed, Mayor Bill McKay is seeking feedback on the proposed composition of the supporting Economic Development Strategic Planning Committee that will come together to lead the process of creating a new economic development strategy for Nanaimo.
Currently the City is seeking applicants from various sectors to create a well-rounded group of economic development partners. Sector representatives are sought for:
- Forestry
- Agriculture
- Transportation & Warehousing
- Manufacturing
- Commercial Development
- Renewable Energy
- Retail
- Health care
- Education
- Tourism
- Technology
- Construction
- Labour Market
- Professional, Scientific and Technical
If members of the public have additional ideas on the sectoral make-up of the committee, they are encouraged to email the Mayor at Bill.McKay@nanaimo.ca.

Quotes
"We want the strategic direction of the City's efforts to be as wide ranging as possible and don't want to miss any current or upcoming sector of economic activity from participating in setting that direction. I look forward to input from all sectors that add economic growth and value in the City of Nanaimo."
"Industry experts who are passionate about our beautiful city and want to help shape its future are encouraged to put their names forward for openings on the Economic Development Strategic Planning Committee."
Quick Facts
- In December 2016, Council passed a motion to cease operations of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) effective January 31, 2017 and replace it with an in-house model.
- Creation of an economic development function operated in-house provides a number of benefits including: (1) coordinated services across all City departments (i.e. development services, permitting, zoning), (2) ready access to key decision makers and enhanced transparency and oversight of operations and budgets and, (3) direct alignment with the City's community vision, planning and strategic plan.
