Council receives update on Water Treatment Plant project
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed July 22, 2014 12:46 PM
Summary
At its Special Open Meeting held July 21, 2014, Council received an update on the construction status of Nanaimo's new Water Treatment Plant located south of the City along South Forks Road.
Work on the facility remains within the approved $70 million dollar budget, which includes allowances for contingency spending, of which approximately $400,000 has been spent on change orders. A revised completion date of September 2015 has now been set.
Link to Strategic Plan: The Water Treatment Plant project directly supports the City's priority of water.
Key Points
- To address earlier delays encountered during concrete work, the contractor, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd., has introduced additional resources to assist the current construction team.
- The balance of the remaining summer and fall construction activities will focus on completing the structure of the main facility building. Interior electrical and mechanical work will then follow.
- The project remains within the approved budget of $70 million. Change orders, a normal part of any construction project, are funded from a contingency included in the budget. Current change orders total less than 1% of the contract value.
Quotes
"With the project over 60 per cent complete, the construction team is focused and committed to deliver a facility that is innovative and will serve the City of Nanaimo with safe drinking water for generations."
"We are excited and proud to be involved in the construction of Nanaimo's new potable water treatment system. This is our company's largest project ever and gives us an opportunity to showcase our craftspeople and their skills."
Quick Facts
- A contingent of 50 to 90 skilled tradespeople, many being local, are on site daily. Over 200,000 person hours of work are anticipated.
- Local firms haven been contracted to complete $49 million in construction, including Harris Steel, Houle Electric, Archie Johnstone Plumbing and Heating, Mayco Concrete and Knappett Industries.
- Engineering work is carried out by Associated Engineering Ltd. from Burnaby who employs many local firms including Levelton Geotechnical, LGL Environmental, Koers & Associates, HJ Wilke and Acuren.
